about

Sean Noonan Releases "Silo: Episodes for Solo Speaking Drummer" –

Sean Noonan, a celebrated drummer and composer known for his innovative "Rhythmic Storytelling," is back with his second solo release, Silo: Episodes for Solo Speaking Drummer. This album draws inspiration from neo-primitivism, a musical movement that challenges traditional Western forms, and is set to redefine the boundaries of contemporary music.

Neo-Primitivism Reimagined

Neo-primitivism takes inspiration from the idea that "nearly all primitive music" is sung with percussion accompaniment. It creates a new form of polyphony, where each part is independent but must end together, often featuring rapid rhythmic changes, syncopations, polyrhythms, and cross-rhythms. Noonan embraces these features to craft a wild and raucous style that seamlessly blends with soft and soothing elements, resulting in a truly ritualistic musical experience.

Sean Noonan: The Rhythmic Storyteller

A speaking drummer and composer, Sean Noonan is not content with traditional categorizations. He prefers the title of "rhythmic storyteller," an apt description for a modern-day sonic griot who weaves captivating narratives with his unique polyrhythmic language. Noonan skillfully merges the voice with the drum kit, creating what he calls a "fifth limb," transcending the conventional roles of a drummer and a narrator into one cohesive unit.

A Prolific Career Spanning Genres

With a prolific career spanning over 30 albums, Noonan has ventured across diverse genres, from rock opera to avant-garde chamber music and improvised jazz-rock. His projects have featured an array of artists, including the likes of Marc Ribot, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Malcolm Mooney (CAN), Matthew Bourne, and Abdoulaye Diabaté. He has performed in numerous venues and international festivals worldwide, captivating audiences with his unique sonic storytelling.

Biography:

Sean Noonan's journey began at Berklee College of Music, where he received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. He went on to form The HUB, a punk-jazz trio described as "maniacally exhilarating" by The Guardian. In 2006, he received a commission from the American Composers Forum, leading to the formulation of his "wandering folk" theory, where he explored and adapted folklore from diverse cultural traditions. This period of travel and research resulted in five albums with Brewed by Noon, merging Bardic and Malian Griot traditions.

about

Sean Noonan | drummer, composer, storyteller

Drummer and composer prefers the term “Rhythmic Storyteller” to describe his audacious, genre-defiant artistry. As a modern- day sonic griot he combines the most ancient of traditions with forward-seeking experimentation; as a kind of post-modern wandering minstrel he gathers irreverent folk tales and offbeat inspirations from various cultures and translates them through his own singular worldview ... more
